Post-Classic Racing

For the first meeing at Pembrey 2001, I had fitted new barrel, pistons, and head. Set all the ring gaps at 12thou, and the squish was up at 1mm to be on the safe side. Ignition was set to 1.8mm BTDC. All pretty basic stuff.

Except I had a seize within three laps of practice.

New clutch basket fitted. Plus complete new set of steel and fibre plates. Also fitted a clutch centre bearing conversion, in place of the standard Yamaha oil seal.

Note the magnesium cover. If you want to save weight (instead of going on a diet), then fit one.

Here you can see the 5mm plate fitted to the base of the barrel, due to the use of RD400 rods. Much cheaper, and still use the TZ big-end pins and bearings.

Note the 38mm reverse slide Mukuni carb. You might be able to see that there is no cut-out on the slide. I run mine with 300 mains and 80 power jets.

Finally to the other event of Pembrey. Finished the first race, and in the paddock someone pointed to my front disc. It had two very large cracks. The consequences of that aren’t worth thinking about. Fortunately, Kevin Richards was kind enough to loan me a disc from his spare bike, to race with the next day.

Back home it was off with the Spondon disc and on with this floating disc. Also note the Lockheed caliper, which is an improvement on the standard Yamaha
